Teachit top 5 > National Poetry Day 2005

National Poetry Day website logoWe've searched among the very many poetry resources available in our libraries for those we think will work well on Thursday - either because they're (vaguely - it's hard!) related to the theme of the future, or because they're handy and thought-provoking one-offs. And, in case that's not enough, we've compiled suggestions from colleagues and are asking for yours in return. Hopefully you'll find something to help you share, explore and create wonderful poetry this week. And don't forget to send us the poems you and your students produce so we can showcase them here.

5 TOP TEACHIT RESOURCES FOR NATIONAL POETRY DAY

1. Poetry Thought for Today
A thought-provoking powerpoint presentation. Good for a starter activity - or the different 'thoughts' could be printed and displayed around the school.
KS5 > Poetry > Advanced poetry essentials

2. 'Ozymandias' Sequencing Activity
Get your classes online to try this free Teachit Interactive exercise.

3. Haiku Fridge Magnets
Another one for the computer room. Pupils can experiment with the 'fridge poetry' and then write a 'haiku for space'.
New whizzy things > Online lessons library

4. 'Mental Cases'
Two resources based on Wilfred Owen's poem, both of which could be used as a stimulus for pupils' own writing.
KS3 > Poetry > War poetry

5. Cruncher
Experiment with the 'crunched' text provided in this free sample: pupils can use the words as a basis for their own poems. Teachit.works members can get their pupils 'crunching' their own poems online with this new application.

ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS FOR NATIONAL POETRY DAY ACTIVITIES FROM TEACHIT'S STAFFROOM
(With thanks to Alison, Raynah et al)

1. Popcorn poetry

2. Planet poem posters

3. A 'vote for a poem to bury in a time capsule' competition

4. A 'produce a poem to bury in a time capsule' competition (and we'd like to publish these too - so they'd be preserved digitally as well as literally. See the published work pages to find out how, and maybe win a mystery prize!)

Please do add your own ideas for creative, inspirational and fun poetry lessons. That way, we can produce the definitive list for next year!

Enjoy.

SHOWCASE YOUR POEMS HERE

Once your classes have produced their wonderful poems why not see if you can showcase them here at Teachit? Visit the published work area to find out how or read fab poetry produced by students and teachers in previous National Poetry Days. There'll be a MYSTERY POETRY PRIZE for the best submission.

Go to the National Poetry Society's website for further ideas and activities. On Thursday they'll be announcing the winner of their 'Poem for Space' competition.
