The Poetry Place

Welcome back to Trevor's poetry place.

The aim of the Poetry Place is to help with the teaching, understanding and enjoyment of poetry.

"I've dreamt in my life dreams that have stayed with me ever after, and changed my ideas. They've gone through and through me, like wine through water, and altered the colour of my mind." (Catherine in Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte.)

The Gove in the Government has just sent a letter to primary schools informing them that the 'creative curriculum' is dead.  To be replaced by a more rigid teaching of subject content, we learn. Will teachers go along with that - or endeavour to subvert it?

WORKSHOP
The workshop has dozens of resources, including

  • Help with GCSE poetry
  • Advice for A level teachers
  • Creative Writing Ideas
  • Some resources on poems and poets requested by you
  • Resources on poets who are personal favourites

OPEN STUDIO
Writer at work.  Drop in to see what he's up to at the moment and you can take a look at previous blogs on topics as varied as villanelles to poems in the style of... Duffy, Armitage, Heaney etc.  The aim is to help you help your students by trying to make the writing process more transparent.

VERSE SURGERY
A place to share your poems and students’ poems. Our Poetry Doctor and Verse Nurse will help out with advice and comments. Send your pupils' poetry, please - to poet@teachit.co.uk

STREET CORNER
FAQs and FEGs (frequently expressed gripes). How to react when students just 'don't get it'? How important are terms like 'enjambment'?  Is it really important to distinguish between similes and metaphors?  And so on...

POETRY PUB
General thoughts on poems and poetry.  Sophie Hannah compares poetry to crime fiction. Why is poetry special?  Books for younger readers. And more..

.What does it MEAN????  and  Personal Response - What's that all about?  'Miss, Miss, what does it MEAN?'   Here are some thoughts about Meaning.   Don't rush for Meaning. Slow down, breathe deeply. Take a look here, it might help.

What kind of 'personal response' is useful?  Some thoughts on how to guide students.

TOUCHSTONES NOW:  TOUCHSTONES@Teachit is a steadily growing area, aiming to help you make the most of the new anthology.
