Duffy and Armitage poetry - Emma | 11/03/2007 |
Hi,
I'm just about to start teaching the Duffy and Armitage and was wondering if anyone had any resources/ideas about how to teach the poems? I'm an NQT and a bit unsure about it all!!
Thanks

Re:Duffy and Armitage poetry - Anna | 11/03/2007 |
Hi Emma,
Three fun things I've tried with the poetry are:
[1] Oldies but goodies: Collapsing a poem - before students see the real poem, take all the words from it, put them in an alphabetical list and get them to write their own poem using only the words in the list. Share with the class, discuss themes which arise. Deleting some words from a poem / replacing some words with pictures - before showing the class the poem give them an amended version which either has some words missing or has pictures in place of words. I've a good picture one on 'Hitcher' for this.
[2] Actions: Get the students to either 'perform' the poem using only the contents of their pencil case (this usually helps them to remember the content, and certain poems can induce pretty funny results) . e.g. 'Hitcher' - the narrator is represented by a pencil, the car is a sharpener, and the unfortunate victim is a rubber - which usually goes whizzing off to the other side of the classroom.... Also, to help students remember what to write about in the exam I get them to come up with a sequence of actions. As a class, think up appropriate actions for theme & content, poet's attitude, rhythm and structure, language devices and personal opinion. One class, for example, remember to comment on the structure of a poem by drawing a box mid air with their fingers. My class are rowdy kinaesthetic learners and need to be 'doing' all the time!
[3] After teaching a chunk, for a fun lesson I do 'Anthology Anthems' - a collection of songs, each one links to a certain poem in the Anthology e.g. "Blowin' in The Wind" for Hitcher, 'You're So Vain' for Education for Leisure. The students always enjoy that one. I could post a copy of the CD to your school address if you'd like?
Hope this helps!

Re:Duffy and Armitage poetry - Karin | 14/03/2007 |
A few ideas...
Use very short video clips to help lower ability pupils access the narratives. I've used an excerpt from 'Bowling for Colombine' and a bit from the novel 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' to help the access the ideas in 'Education for Leisure'. The scene from 'Great Expectations' where Miss Havisham explains to Pip why she is so bitter and terrible then bursts into flame makes a nice introduction to 'Havisham'.
Pictionary illustrating pertinant similes and metaphors from different poems is a nice revision tool once you have a few poems done (Be careful with 'November' though).
Annotating the poems using a key based on the three assessment criteria (a different colour for Language, Structure and COntent) is helpful for revision and reinforces what they need to be covering in the exam.
Empathetic/Imaginative Starters are a nice way into some of the Pre-1914 poems. Imagining the perfect revenge (the laboratory), writing their own Elegy (Tom Whatit's Elegy), writing their own petrarchian sonnet (Sonnet 113).
I have plenty of resources. Post your e-mail address if you'd like them.

I love the idea of the Anthology Anthems, I use music al ot in my teaching, I'd love a copy of your CD, I have one to inspire creative writing in return if you'd like a copy. Things tend to get lost in my school so if you don't mind I'd rather it was sent to my home address. But obviously I don't wish to post it on public forum!
If you've got time to contact me via my email I'll give you my address then. fluffyhandbag@hotmail.com |

Re:Duffy and Armitage poetry - Claire Collins | 06/06/2007 |
Hi there,
Is there any chance of getting a copy of the CD you allude to. I have a paypal account if you would like me to pay for the CD and postage. It sounds like such a fabulous idea.
My school address is: Claire Collins, Cirencester Kingshill School, Cirencester. GLOS. GL7 2LG.
Many thanks for some inspiration.
Claire Collins
P.S. I did a good speaking and listening which was a chat show with characters from the poems. Works well with Salome and Havisham. |

| We've just discovered some new books/resources called "Tortoise & Weasel". They do AQA Lit poems and Other Cultures. Full of lesson plans/resources/images etc. All the whizzy stuff that we English teachers spend hours thinking up, chopping up and sticking up but done for you! |

Re:Duffy and Armitage poetry - louise | 17/05/2007 |
