Mixing tenses
Students identify where tense changes occur in some excerpts of narrative writing and explain the effect this has. They also consider the effects of switching from third person to first person. In the light of some notable popular modern fiction – The Hunger Games and All the Light We Cannot See for others – written in the present tense, the resource could provide an interesting discussion on the merits and effects of tense.
Students then redraft a piece of their own writing and experiment with tense changes for dramatic effect.
Teacher's notes are provided and include detailed comments about how using different tenses varies the immediacy and pace.
