A sample extract from the resource:

  1. Decode it.

Try to decode the word – look for its root word or look at the prefix or suffix to help you to understand the word better. For example:

  • com- means ‘with’ (communicate, competition)
  • inter- means ‘between’ (interrupt, interfere)
  • -ous, -ious means ‘characterised by’ (disastrous, marvellous)
  1. Break it down.

Break the word down and think about the sounds and syllables, such as Wed-nes-day or fri-end.

  1. Create your own mini wordsearch.

Use this grid to create your own wordsearch using three to five of the words from the list. You can write them across, up, down and diagonally.

  1. Memory marvel.

Group work

  • Work in groups to learn a set of spellings.
  • Each person in the group will take one spelling, learn it and come up with a memorable phrase or system to help others learn the word.
  • Take five minutes to learn your word.
  • Take five more minutes to come up with your memorable phrase, trick or system to remember the spelling.
  • Now teach your group how to spell and memorise your word.
  • Once everyone has had a turn, it’s time to test your memories!
  • Each group member says their word and their way to remember it. Everyone writes each word down in turn.
  • Peer mark another group member’s spellings to see how many each person has learnt and whose memory trick is the best!
  • Name your group winner!
  • Share your best spelling strategy to memorise spellings with the class.
