Students read an excerpt from Dickens' Oliver Twist in which Oliver meets Jack Dawkins, 'the Artful Dodger' for the first time and then complete activities to explore the characters.

The tasks include:

  • thought-tracking Oliver's thoughts and feelings on the worksheet, alongside the dialogue
  • dramatising the scene in pairs, in the roles of Oliver and Jack
  • performing the scene with another pair who voice the thoughts for each of the two characters.

This activity was designed as a way in to more challenging 19th-century texts for Key Stage 3 readers, and could be used with students in Key Stage 4 who would benefit from developing confidence with unseen texts.
