my students were asking me yesterday what they have to do to get an A* and I found it very difficult to give them a simple answer. They have to get an A grade overall and 90% of the A2 marks but it's not as simple as that ... 1. What would you tell them? 2. Does anyone have any ideas what teachers can do to increase their chances? |

| I may be wrong here BUT... Given that you have probably fed them most of the lit crit they have... even B grade students... I would say that 90% of A Level students will regurgitate between 30% and 60% of what you have told them, in a fairly uninspiring way (ask any examiner). The students who REALLY stood out, and thus deserved their A*, express either something beyond the norm which you fed them, or the final 40%, BYPASSING what they perceive as the pedestrian 60%, with a style, eloquence and BREVITY which contains a definite WOW factor. What is the WOW factor? It makes the examiner say... '....!' Try writing the essays you give them yourself. When you have depressed yourself by reading it, try again, discarding the boring normal stuff you wrote and REALLY show off! THEN you will deserve an A* - photocopy and distribute, break it down, and... HOPE! |

I don't think I'd have got an A* if it had been available when I was a student. It seems it's hard to know what to do assome of the students who got A* this year were predicted a B or a C. They seemed to suddenly obtain the 'wow!' factor at the very last minute. Managers at my school are demanding predictions for the 2012 results already and they won't accept it's not possible to say yet. |

| I know I'm going to regret this, but I have a couple of A* exemplar responses - hard copy only as my scanner has died. |

Hi Sue, If your scanner is working now, could you please send me a copy of your A* exemplars? I'd be very grateful. Thanks Wally |

Hi Sue, If you are in a position to send any exemplar material now, I'd be very grateful. I have been on eaqa and found some examples but not for the part of the course we are teaching! Take care, Wally |
