The Poetry Place

Welcome to Trevor's poetry place

The aim of the Poetry Place is to help with the teaching, understanding and enjoyment of poetry.  Enjoyment being something rather lost in the current climate... (see Poetry and Mr Gradgrind.)

Recently returned from a conference of English teachers and like-minded folk in the Kent and Medway area focusing on creativity. Here are some of the things which were composed in a few minutes that we stole for our own creativity. Earthworks.

To try to achieve those aims, we've set up the following areas, which are growing all the time:

OPEN STUDIO
Writer at work.  Drop in to see what he's up to at the moment - though he may be taking a bit of a break to recharge those creative batteries.  But you can take a look at previous blogs on topics as varied as villanelles to poems in the style of... Duffy, Armitage, Heaney etc.  The aim is to help you help your students by trying to make the writing process more transparent.

STREET CORNER
FAQs and FEGs (frequently expressed gripes). How to react when students just 'don't get it'? How important are terms like 'enjambment'?  Is it really important to distinguish between similes and metaphors?  And so on...

POETRY PUB
General thoughts on poems and poetry.  Why is poetry special?  Books for younger readers. And more...

VERSE SURGERY
A place to share your poems and students’ poems. Our Poetry Doctor and Verse Nurse will help out with advice and comments. Send your pupils' poetry, please - to poet@teachit.co.uk
