Group work role cards
A set of role cards for each of four members of a discussion group, suitable for any group discussion task. Students assume these four roles:
- speaker
- scribe
- judge
- pioneer.
Of course you could add to the groups by adding further roles: a chairperson who facilitates the discussion or an assessor who makes notes on the group members' contributions, for instance.
To finish your chosen discussion task, you could get student 'speakers' to report their group's decisions to the next group and so on, until the whole class knows how other groups got on, before discussing together the different outcomes.
Allocating roles to students for a formal discussion would help students prepare for a formal presentation on any issue, when they need to take a number of points of view into consideration.
