This popular and fun work pack on extreme sport videos includes teaching notes, lesson ideas and activities for two extreme sport videos on surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding.

There's a range of differentiated activities for all attainment levels, and the tasks focus on building students' understanding of language, purpose and audience.

Students look at two video models, explore the range of media and language techniques used before creating their own 'extreme sports' how to video. Recommended!

The featured videos include Red Bull's 2010 Project Air and a 'How to' video on hitting a jump in snowboarding.

This popular work pack was originally designed to support the legacy Edexcel GCSE specification controlled assessment task (June 2010 to May 2011), but is suitable for both KS3 and KS4 learners as well as international curriculums and teachers.

Example lesson activities from the workpack:

Task 1

After watching the video, how confident do you feel about your ability to perform a safe snowboard jump? Are Matt’s instructions clear? What advice would you give him to improve his instructions?

Think of other situations in which you might need to give instructions. Build on the list below by adding three bullet points to the bottom of the list:

  • recipes
  • setting up a new computer
  • joining a social network.

Task 2

Write a brief set of instructions for a procedure you are familiar with – it could be making a cup of tea, how to tie a lace, or something more specialised.

Read your instructions to a partner who will mime each stage. How clear are your instructions?

Task 3

  • What sorts of words feature in your instructions?
  • We often use the imperative form of verbs when giving instructions. For example ‘turn’, ‘stop’, ‘lift’ are all verbs that tell someone what to do. Highlight all the imperatives in your instructions.
  • Now watch the ‘How to ...’ video again and wave your arms in the air each time you hear Matt using an imperative verb.

Task 4

Which of the following words or phrases would you use to describe Matt’s instructions in this video?

suitable for beginners          friendly          aimed at young people          fun

aimed at an older audience          serious          engaging          formal

aimed at experienced snowboarders          interesting          useful

Task 6

You are now going to prepare a short ‘How to ...’ video on a sport or skill of your choice.  Before you begin, answer the following questions:

  • What is the overall purpose of your video?
  • Does your audience consist of complete beginners or people with some prior experience?
  • Which age group are you aiming at?
  • Where do you think your video would be shown or used?
  • Where would you, ideally, set your ‘How to ...’ video?
  • How would you speak to your audience? What tone would you use? What sort of language – formal or chatty?
  • How will your video appeal to your audience?
  • Will you use music?

Now storyboard and script your video. Aim for it to last at least one minute (around 1000 words).

If you are able to, go out and film it!
