So I did try it out with some students at Brumby school. They were great and seemed to like it - so, apart from a few tweaks, I'll probably leave it much as it is and then come back to it in a few week's time and see if I still like it. Needs to be read pretty fast.

I put all the lines that made couplets of collections - verses, even - onto a big sheet and (a) moved them around and (b) prioritised them - putting the ones I was least happy with at the bottom. Then tried to see connections and tied the various parts back together.
Bring on the subs bring on the wraps Sandwiches and Bacon baps Chocolate cookies Ginger snaps In your stomach Fill those gaps Fairy cakes Fresh home bakes Sausage rolls Keep body and soul Together while You relish the taste Of custard cream and almond paste Cinnamon whirls Gingerbread men and gingerbread girls with icing lips and chocolate curls inches on hips and jam on my face All those pastries Add to your waist Easy to see How calories Can pile up quick Better stick To that French stick Or maybe get A long baguette I'm going through a phase of mayonnaise / on everything / drips off my chin / don't ever think / I'll be thin again... In the meantime though I need some dough So give me Give me a sub Give me a wrap Give me a sandwich Or a bacon bap
Repetition at the end? I'll try it out tomorrow.

Cinnamon whirls Gingerbread men and gingerbread girls with icing lips and chocolate curls inches on hips and --
Am I going to list everything ever sold in a baker's shop or is it time to call a halt? I think it's time to consolidate. Which means getting all these lines and spreading them out on a big sheet of paper. Unfortunately I can't do that in this blogospot.

Not sure where this is going. It could go on for quite a while, especially if I keep coming up with other edibles from the baker's shop
Chocolate cookies Ginger snaps In your stomach Fill those gaps
A big bread bun Full of (what? - cheese? ham? tuna mayonnaise?)
Why do you get beef sandwiches, ham sandwiches but never lamb sandwiches? Cold lamb is delicious, too.
In a rap like this you do have to think of rhymes - or at least near rhymes. Tuna doesn't sound rich in rhymes but ham, cheese, even mayonnaise have possibilities. End that malaise with mayonnaise! I'm going through a phase of mayonnaise / on everything / drips off my chin / don't ever think / I'll be thin again... Hard to stop once you're started.

Don't forget Your long baguette or Pick and mix a long French stick
And...en passant A chocolate croissant?
(Well, why not? Let's get MFL on board too.)
All those pastries Add to your waist Easy to see How calories Can pile up quick Better stick To that French stick!

Just a few starting points...
Bring on the subs bring on the wraps Sandwiches and Bacon baps
Healthy options Not our style Do we want salad? No way!
Pull up a seat Rest your feet Give yourself A chocolate treat
Rest your legs Rest your back Give yourself A deep fry snack
Off to Normandy for a few days. Just think about those pastries...

June musing | |

Musing - there's a strange word. If you heard one of your pupils using it 'using musing' you'd be surprised, I think. In my mind, connected to the Muse or muse, hence the title I've used very often for talks and books and websites: the Mouse and the Muse. Anyway, musing on words you pick up as you mosey about. (To move along gently, says Chambers, but also, alternatively, to hurry. Words! - you can't pin them down). Anyway, moseying along musing, I came across subs and wraps - on signs in a fast food shop window. My 1980s Chambers doesn't have wrap as a noun and sub is a prefix unless slang for submarine or a loan. However, it does have bap and, of course, bun.
These words are fun and pupils usually enjoy playing with them. They yearn for rhymes and rhythms and word play. The shop in question was already playing with words with this pun: bring on the subs! Then there's 'it's a wrap' or Wrap Music. and so on.
Subs and wraps, sandwiches and baps. There must be a little rhyme/rap/song/ chant here, surely?
