G & T to the tune of Surrey with the Fringe on top
Wednesday, 3 June 2009 15:07:49 |
This is it for the moment:
Coming home on a day full of stresses lost my data and internet addresses sent out emails full of hope and guesses and I need a shot...
When I get that smell in the kitchen Then my little nose starts a-twitchin' And my fingers, they are itchin' For a Gee and Tee...
The lemon is sharp and the tonic is fizzy the gin is a Bombay Sapphire the ice cubes are ready and I'm getting busy creating something we aaaad-mire!
When the weather is hot, and the sun shines a lot or even when the weather is dreary there's a drink where just a wee tot will cheer up the wan and the weary!
Ain't no finer drink I'm a-thinking when those ice cubes are clinking then it's time fer us to be drinking that....Gee and the Teeeeee...
...yes that lovely little tonic with the gin in the top!!

G and T nearly complete?

Some changes to the first verse both for the rhythm and making better sense:
coming home on a day full of stresses lost my data and internet addresses sent out emails full of hope and guesses and I need a shot...
A couple of extra syllables in this verse to help the rhythm:
When I get that smell in the kitchen Then my little nose starts a-twitchin' And my fingers, they are itchin' For a Gee and Tee...
And finally got some rhymes by moving lines around in this verse:
The lemon is sharp and the tonic is fizzy the gin is a Bombay Sapphire the ice cubes are ready and I'm getting busy creating something we aaaad-mire!

I've given up on the previous verse for a while. Here's another one to the same tune.
when the weather is hot, and the sun shines a lot or even when the weather is dreary there's a drink where just a wee tot will cheer up the wan and the weary!
composed with hardly a falter. (Nothing much I had to alter... oh dear, I fear I am infected with Oklahomitis)

The tune changes when we get to the bit about 'the upholstery is genuine leather...' I haven't got any rhymes ready yet, but this is the kind of thing I have in mind:
the tonic is cold and the lemon is -- the gin is a bombay sapphire the ice cubes are clinking into the glass and I'm getting ready for --
Hmmm. Time for a.....

Lyric Challenge - aka the G&T Song

Second verse coming up...
coming home on a day full of stresses lost my stuff and email addresses sent out <something> full of hope and guesses and I need a shot...
of that lovely gin and tonic with the... cherry on top? No, lemon on top? Doesn't have to e on top at all, of course. The trouble with writing to an existing tune which has existing lyrics is that you keep thinking of them. Then there's the change to... that bit that ends "in case there's a change in the weather." (Some hopes.)

When a tune keeps going through your head, maybe that's a sign. So as I lay in bed waiting for unconsciousness to seep over me like a warm welcome incoming wave, the song from Oklahoma kept going round. Why? No idea. The one abut the Surrey with the fringe on top. But then, as sleep continued to elude me, in lieu of sleep, some ideas started to arrive. When I get that smell in the kitchen Then my nose starts a-twitchin' And my fingers are itchin' For a ....
For a what? Well, although this is a school sit, surely no one will be too scandalised to realise that a poet needs a drink. And not just any old drink. A gin and tonic. A G & T which is in itself the most gifted and talented of imbibations.

A Lyric Challenge | |

As with many of you, creative thoughts and urges do not always flow so readily and I respond best to a challenge - or a commission, of course. There's a poetry group over the river in Beverley which meets once a month and there's a theme for each month. Next month, there's an unusual theme - i.e. lyrics. That doesn't just mean writing a song minus the music. It means, in this case, writing some new lyrics to an existing melody. Which is indeed a challenge. First of all - which melody? There are so many to choose from. Then there is the difficulty of avoiding a simple copy or parody. So, watch this space and think of a tune....

Twinkle twinkle little drive How I wish you were alive In the bin you now reside All that data stuck inside.
Still using rhymes as therapy, you see. Maybe some more adult thoughts tomorrow.

I've been blogless for a few days suffering from that archetypal disease: hard drive crash. Unheralded, no forewarning, just zilch. And of course, we've never got a completely up to date back up have we? And it's always last week's documents which are the ones you need. And the email addresses! So, the poetic juices have been flowing but more of this variety than anything more meaningful... There was a computer hard drive Which suddenly took a nose-dive They poked it and nudged it But just couldn't budge it So ...
So... then you wish you'd (a) made a back up (b) chosen a different line ending.
