A comprehensive introduction to public speaking and how formal speeches are staged, which includes a planning template, a series of warm-up debate topics, role cards for the speakers, proposals for persuasive speech topics and a self-assessment evaluation sheet.

The Word document includes teaching notes on the structure of the whole lesson or series of lessons, as well as task sheets for students:

  • an argument tree planning grid for planning any of the speaking tasks (warm-up or main topic)
  • a series of warm-up discussion tasks where students work in groups of three to practise speaking persuasively
  • role cards for the chairperson, speaker and the proposer of the vote of thanks
  • a self-assessment checklist.

The PowerPoint presentation includes an overview of the three roles, a number of topics for the main speech and a summary of how to perform well when giving a speech.

This resource would be ideal preparation for school public speaking competitions or for developing students' ability to develop strong arguments.
