Two fact file activities on interesting figures from Roman Britain as part of this black history fact files series. Students will learn about the 'Ivory Bangle Lady' and create their own fact file on Septimius Severus.
Lucius Septimius Severus was born into a wealthy and connected family in AD 145, in a Roman city called Leptis Magna. This city is in what is would now be called Libya in north-east Africa.
As a teenager Septimius travelled to the centre of the Roman Empire – Rome. Whilst there, Septimius developed a career as a Roman politician. Severus served the Roman Empire as governor of different regions such as Gaul (modern France).
Following the overthrow of the Roman Emperor by a rival in June 193, Severus marched with troops on Rome. He was declared Emperor by the Roman senate.
