An extract from the resource:

Following the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952, Princess Elizabeth was immediately acceded to the throne and became Queen Elizabeth II. She discovered the news of her father’s death while in Kenya on a royal tour of the Commonwealth with her husband Philip. The tour was abandoned and she returned home to be greeted at the airport by Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953.

She was 25 years old. It was a solemn event and crowds of people viewed the procession despite heavy rain. At The Queen’s request the ceremony was also broadcast on television for the very first time.
