A wonderful list of diverse reading recommendations and young adult novels to share with your KS3-5 students to encourage more reading for pleasure and broaden students' engagement with diverse authors and characters.

This carefully curated selection includes 24 novels, graphic novels, anthologies and collections of short stories, featuring writers of colour, LGBT writers, neurodiverse writers, Jewish writers, working class writers and writers with disabilities.

The writers featured include Keren David, Kereen Getten, Liz Kessler, Sue Cheung, Tanya Byrne, William Hussey, Yasmin Rahman, Juno Dawson and Simon James Green, among other own voices writers.

There's a summary of the plot, along with key words and recommendation tips so you can tailor each book suggestion to meet your students' interests. There are also suggestions for anthologies to enrich curriculum delivery.

You'll also find recommendations based on popular new Netflix series or films so engage students' interests.

This set of recommendations is designed to introduce students to diverse writers and characters, as part of our Diversity in literature collection.

This set of reading recommendations is written by Beth Kemp, an English teacher, writer and researcher who is currently pursuing a PhD on young people’s reading and diversity.
