Students work in pairs with this Spanish 'trapdoor' or 'mind-reader' speaking activity, designed to embed key structures through repetition. It's also perfect for practising reading aloud.

Partner A secretly marks option 1, 2 or 3 at random for each sentence about what they like to eat at different times of the day. Partner B starts to read out the text, selecting one of the options. If they guess correctly, they can continue to read out the text. If they guess wrongly, they are told '¡otra vez!' and they must start again from the beginning of the text. They then swap over and partner B marks the options whilst A guesses.

Another way to play with an element of competition is to get the students to swap roles every time one of them makes a mistake – the winner will be the first to correctly reconstruct their partner's text. No pens are allowed once the first choices have been marked on the sheet, as this is a memory challenge! Once the speaking task has been completed, students could write up their version of the text, adapt it or translate it.
