A Christmas Carol
A beautifully illustrated resource in which students track the changes in Scrooge's character throughout Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Students record their observations in boxes allocated to each of the five Staves. This could make a useful accompaniment to a reading of the text, with students completing each box as they go.

Lower ability students have used this worksheet whilst reading the book to create a log of events and changes; they have then used it as a planning sheet to help structure their essays.
I have changed the task for mid-range students - they have worked in groups to find quotes from each stave to show the changes in Scrooge's character and we have then discussed the quotes as a class to consider how they could be used to justify points in essays and the effects of any literary devices.
The most effective lesson was with higher ability students though: working in groups they had to complete the task using as few words as possible but including as much information as possible. This led into further lessons on how word choice, sentence structure and punctuation could be used to pack information into essays effectively: the essays they then wrote showed huge improvement. I have now used this technique with classes before starting to write several other essays - it has really helped them to consider not only what they're writing but also how they're writing.
