This brilliant SPaG teaching resource for KS3-4 students includes a template for a 3D punctuation pyramid to cut out and display on students' desks, so they can check their use of punctuation marks when completing any written work.

It also includes 14 quick, fun and unusual writing tasks for students to choose from, from reviews to instruction writing and flash fiction tasks, so students can actively practice their punctuation skills. Perfect for SPaG starters. Highly recommended!

Example writing tasks from the resource:

  • You’re on the first passenger flight to the moon.  Write a postcard home.
  • Write a recipe for a meal you’d cook for an enemy, in no more than 100 words.
  • Write a complex sentence, including the following objects: washing up liquid, a snail, New York and a sausage.
  • Summarise a news report from today’s news in 30 words.
  • Imagine someone has written your autobiography.  In 75 words, write the back cover blurb.
  • Write a review of your favourite book/song/film/app/game in 75 words.
  • Argue in favour (or against) a ban on mobile phones in schools, in 50 words or less.
  • Write a sentence about chocolate in 15 words, using as many forms of punctuation as you can.  (It must make sense!)

I haven't used it yet, as I am just in the process of getting resources for the coming session. I intend to use the fabulous writing prompts as starters to some of my lessons (Year 7), or as short punctuation tests. The ideas are absolutely brilliant, and funny too! The class will certainly be putting the pyramid to good use too. Thanks for sharing.
