This popular presentation provides an interesting opportunity to test linguistic relativity hypothesis in your classroom with students. Students look at a series of images of babies (animal and human) and attempt to give them a name. They then explore the role of the third person singular pronoun he/she in relation to gendered language. There are extensive teaching notes to support classroom teachers on linguistic relativity and gender, and suggestions for how the activity might be run.
