This resource is a complete lesson for students to work through the enquiry question "Who – or what – was most to blame for the US army’s defeat at Little Bighorn?". Students begin with a revision activity of the causes of the battle. The main task involves students reading and interrogating a range of primary sources, contemporaneous interpretations, and historians' interpretations; students use this writing to sort the evidence supporting different perspectives on the enquiry question, before reaching their own substantiated judgement. The resource also features teaching notes pointing teachers towards a high-level discussion online about the event, which could be planned as an extension.
