A fun one-off lesson, designed specifically as a year 6/7 transition activity for a move-up day activity or taster session.

It involves a number of different space-themed missions, including code-breaking tasks, deciphering Martian poem-riddles and 'shoot the asteroid' homophone challenges. There are also collaborative story-telling and group writing activities.

Students work in small groups to complete the tasks and navigate their way into a secret Martian temple, eventually writing a Martian-style poem.

The resource includes a PowerPoint to guide students through the activities, and a worksheet for students to make notes on, as well as 6 'Martian' poems to display around the Martian temple (aka your classroom!).

An example activity from the lesson:

While waiting for the clearance checks before launch, you are sitting around as a crew, swapping stories about your previous missions into space.

Each of you will share three words of a story. For example, person 1 might start with: ‘One moonless night…’.

The next person might say ‘…bright lights flashed…’.

The next person might say ‘…warning bells hummed…’ and so on until we've created a shared story.
