Exploring structure in an extract: 'Great Expectations'

I made a laminated copy of the text and cut it up into paragraphs. I randomly divided them and asked students to use sticky labels to indicate any structural devices they noted in each paragraph (eg long, complex sentences, short simple sentences, any repetition, dialogue, questions,etc)
I then collected and laminated images which matched each paragraph from the David Lean film and got students to match an image to each paragraph.
I then got them to try to suggest an order for the text as a whole, outlining reasons for their choices.
Only then did I issue the chart and got them to complete it using the prompts to make comments on structural devices used.
I made a powerpoint to offer a modelled response to the chart using the images and my own comments on structural choices in each paragraph.
