A lovely KS3-4 worksheet resource to practise bearings.

The activity introduces Captain Sam who knows there is treasure buried on an island, but he only has an outline map. Students record the route he takes by following a series of bearings and distances.

The worksheet has 5 tasks:

  • Task 1: Rules for giving bearings
  • Task 2: Using a rule and protractor, draw the route that Captain Sam takes
  • Task 3: Find the coordinates of the treasure
  • Task 4/5: Further questions designed to get students thinking more deeply

Year 8 really enjoyed this activity.

With the changes to the new curriculum, bearings have to be taught in year 7 already, and I have a very low ability group of students. They really enjoyed this resource, as I gave them a prize at the end of the challenge too. Thanks for this amazing resource.

I used this with low ability year 10's and they really enjoyed the challenge.
I like the recap of the definition of a bearing as the first task.

This is a brilliant resource and by changing it from Captain Sam to Big Bob and a hunt for pies, it gave my year 11 class a real chuckle as well as leading to a fabulous start to drawing bearings. Saved me hours of work - hope I can return the favour having produced something you can use. Keep up the good work.
