I think it is very important that we all have the chance to be able to share our own approaches to teaching topics which on first sight may seem difficult to make interesting. This particularly applies to practical activities, which sadly seem to be becoming more and more neglected. If we are raising the next generation of scientists then it is surely important that they engage with the universe as real scientists do and that is through experimental work.

I am just about to start my fortieth year in teaching which has come as rather a shock to me! In that time I have taught in a variety of different schools from Inner City comprehensives to rural schools in Cornwall. Despite my degree being in chemistry I have taught mainly physics. In my lessons I try to make the work I set as practical as I can and also to encourage understanding by taking a questioning approach within lessons.
