Although I work full time in a large primary school in the North East, I also work on behalf of the Great North Maths Hub, supporting schools in embedding a Teaching for Mastery approach in line with the new curriculum. I am an accredited Professional Development Lead for Maths. I have been Maths Subject Leader in my last two schools. I have found that high quality resources with significant visual representation of number allow children to develop a deeper understanding of the numbers that they handle. I am particularly keen to ensure that children's understanding is built upon solid foundations in the Early Years. A key feature of this is to include a variation of pictorial representation of numbers to complement and reinforce the abstract calculations they will begin to carry out.
