About the speaker:

Kate Browning is an independent SEND Consultant focusing on school improvement for SEND. She has over 20 years of experience as a teacher, SENCo, Local Authority SEN officer. She also contributed to nationwide SEND training with the Department for Education while working for NASEN.

She now works with a range of schools to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND. Kate also teaches the National Award for SEN Coordination, facilitates SENCo networks across the Midlands and is an associate lecturer on SEND for Warwick, Northampton and Derby Universities.

The Big Picture what the SEND CoP says

Slow progress and low attainment do not necessarily mean that a child has SEN.

Equally, it should not be assumed that attainment in line with chronological age means that there is no learning difficulty or disability.

Some learning difficulties and disabilities occur across the range of cognitive ability and, left unaddressed, may lead to frustration, which may manifest itself as disaffection, emotional or behavioural difficulties.
