In this 30-minute CDP video and accompanying PowerPoint resource, A revision revolution — building an effective study culture in your school, Helen Howell talks about why we need a revision revolution in schools and how teachers can change the way students think about revision. She also outlines a range of techniques for effective revision in secondary schools.

Watch the webinar, and download the free, accompanying PowerPoint presentation to share with colleagues.

About the speaker:

Helen Howell is Director of English at the Blue Coat School in Oldham. She's the author of The Revision Revolution: How to build a culture of effective study in your school, co-written with Ross Morrison McGill. She's passionate about encouraging schools to build a culture of study – so that students revise effectively and even enjoy it!

Here's an extract from the downloadable PowerPoint resource to accompany the webinar:

The ‘Why’: students understand the principles of effective revision through a centralised cognitive science curriculum.

The ‘How’: students have a toolbox of strategies to use for effective revision that are repeatedly modelled to them in lessons.

‘Why’ & ‘How’ combined: students can independently revise at home by selecting tools from their revision toolbox that are both effective and non-threatening. There is a clear connection between the powerful knowledge of the curriculum, assessment and revision.

Helen, thank you for putting together such a great presentation. The teaching of revision techniques is undervalued in secondary education and the work you are doing will hopefully encourage more schools to take up the mantle and improve in this area. Just a one hour presentation has given me so many ideas on how to upgrade my lessons and whole school strategies for implementation.
It would, however, be nice if Teachit provided certificates for those who download and watch the training video. You know what schools are like when it comes to evidence!

A great watch. As a Science teacher, I do like to know why and how ideas work. Helen explains her research and tool kit really well and it was useful to 'give a name' to some teaching strategies that I use and that work... 'oracy'!!
I have ordered her book and hope to start a revision revolution in my school.
