Identifying hazard symbols
A simple but effective worksheet on the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) symbols for classifying chemical hazards.
Students match the hazard symbols to their meanings, consider why it is important to have an international system for labelling hazardous materials and then decide which chemical hazard symbols should be used for a variety of hazard statements, such as ‘Makes your eyes sting’ or ‘Reacts violently with water’. Finally, they think about what other information should be included on the label of a hazardous product, design the label and then compare it with a real-life label.
The worksheet includes the following hazard signs:
- exploding bomb = explosive
- torso = serious health hazard
- exclamation mark = moderate health hazard
- flame = flammable
- flame over circle = oxidising
- gas cylinder = gas under pressure
- skull and crossbones = toxic
- drops of acid = corrosive
- dead tree and fish = hazardous to the environment.
