Separating techniques

This PowerPoint resource can be used for the KS3 separating techniques.

Show students three jars one with a mixture of sand and water, one with oil and water and the last one filled with air. Ask students to suggest how they could separate them.

The first two are straightforward and could be demonstrated. The PowerPoint explores air as a mixture and the states of the components at different temperatures. The final slide introduces the idea of fractional distillation of liquid air. There are links to a video and a challenge activity. Answers are included.
