Embedded reading: A Christmas Carol
Three versions of the opening to Dickens' classic story; two are simplified, and the third is the original text. Use just one of them or use all three to scaffold students' reading of the original opening. Comes with suggestions for how to use the texts.
Extracts from the simplified texts:
Version one – upper-intermediate (B2)
Chapter one – Marley’s ghost
Marley was dead. There is no doubt about that. His death certificate was signed by all the right officials and by Scrooge himself. Old Marley was completely dead.
Version two – advanced (C1)
Chapter one – Marley’s ghost
Marley was dead. There is no doubt at all about that. The register of his burial was signed by all the right officials and by Scrooge himself: and Scrooge’s name on a contract was the ultimate guarantee. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail.
