This card sort resource looks at the causes of uneven development between HICs and LICs. It is designed to support your teaching of GCSE geography but may also be useful for A-level.

Students focus on the three main factors that lead to inequalities in levels of development: physical causes (such as raw materials), economic causes (such as globalisation) and historical causes (such as colonialism). They complete a categorising task on factors that cause the development gap, then match up the factors with supporting pieces of evidence.

An extract from the factors affecting development:

  • Colonialism: between the 1870s and 1900 many European countries started to take control of Asian and African countries in order to gain access to the natural resources there. Wealth derived from raw materials went to colonial powers, leaving the colony poor.
  • Since becoming independent from European colonies, many countries have remained poor. Money has been spent corruptly or on armaments to fuel civil wars.
  • Extreme weather – such as cyclones, droughts and floods – most often hits tropical areas and is becoming more severe.
