The Epping Forest, a temperate deciduous forest in Essex, is a good example of a small-scale ecosystem in the UK. It’s a required case study for the living world topic for some GCSE geography exam specifications (including the AQA GCSE). In this resource, students will learn key information about the Epping Forest, including its location close to London, the biodiversity in this natural environment and the social and economic benefits of the forest.

What’s included?

This resource includes activities for retrieval practice and practice exam questions with mark schemes for peer and self assessment. A lesson PowerPoint includes all activities plus a photo-based lesson starter activity, the worksheet can be used in class or given to students for at-home revision.

Epping Forest is an area of ancient deciduous woodland that runs north-east of London.

It covers an area of about 2,500 hectares – 19km long and 4 km wide.

It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a European Special Area of Conservation.

Fallow deer roam the forest and it is home to 38 species of bird.

There are 700 species of fungi and 177 species of moss and lichen (which grows in dead wood).
