Take 10: Amazon rainforest
This GCSE revision resource explores the question 'What are the causes and impacts of deforestation in the Amazon?' The revision notes recap key statistics about the Amazon rainforest and review the effects of both mining and deforestation on the landscape and ecosystem of the rainforest, including impacts on hydrology, indigenous tribes and rainforest species. They also provide a reminder about methods of sustainable management.
The resource also includes a PowerPoint with colour images that can be used for a starter activity and a Word Document of revision strips that can be cut out and annotated or used for recall practice. The strips and accompanying information are based on the principle of dual coding and are designed to help make the facts memorable. Tips and sample sentences are also included to help students make links between the different aspects of the case study.
This resource was written with the Eduqas B specification in mind but will be relevant to all exam boards.
An extract from the information in the revision notes:
Mining, peasant farming, ranching, industry, logging and over-population cause deforestation. |
Deforestation reduces biodiversity, changes hydrology and leads to soil erosion. |
