This is the second of two resources that provide an overview of British history from 1880 to 1926. It can be used to follow on from the first resource, Chase the answer: British history, 1880–1914, or as a standalone activity.

Working individually, in pairs or in small groups, students join the cards into one chain of events by reading the opening phrases at the bottom of one card and finding the part that follows (in italics) at the top of another card.

This resource covers:

  • a brief summary of the events of the First World War
  • the social and economic impacts of WWI
  • the General Strike.

These two resources were designed for year 12 students taking the WJEC A-level option on Politics, people and progress c.1880–1980, but they could also be useful for other A-level units on reforms and transformations in Britain over a similar period.

An extract from the complete text:

In real terms, people were paying income tax of 6 pence in the pound in 1914, but by 1918 that had risen to 30 pence in the pound. The cost of the war was huge, and by the time it came to an end in 1918 the government was spending £6,107,000 a day.

According to official figures, 16,000 men had registered as concientious objectors. Of these, 1,500 were sent to prison as they could not plead strongly enough that they had sufficient reason to object to fighting. In prison, these men had to face harsh treatment, not only from the other prisoners but also from the officers.
