Help KS3 students conquer ratio word problems using visual bar models and the box method to clearly illustrate the underlying mathematical structure, making abstract concepts more accessible.
What's included
- A carefully structured worksheet that breaks ratio problems into three distinct categories: sharing totals, given one share and given the difference between shares
- Clear worked examples using the bar model method that visually represent the ratio, making abstract concepts concrete for students
- Progressive difficulty with answers included, allowing for self-assessment and differentiation

How to use this resource
This resource is particularly effective when introduced as part of a sequence on ratios. Begin with a whole-class demonstration of the bar model approach using the worked examples. Then have students work through the problems in pairs, encouraging discussion about the structure of each problem type. For lower attaining students, provide additional scaffolding by pre-drawing some of the bar models. Challenge higher attaining students by asking them to create their own word problems for each category. The structured progression allows students to build confidence before tackling the more complex problems involving differences between shares.
