This KS3 science worksheet on Hooke’s Law would make an ideal homework task or revision activity.

It is based on the results of a practical investigation into the extension of a spring when different masses were attached, without exceeding the spring’s elastic limit. Students use the data provided to find the extension of the spring then plot a force-extension graph; from the resulting straight line, they will see that the two are directly proportional.

This worksheet could be used after students have carried out a similar investigation on Hooke’s Law, or it could also be used instead of the practical activity. Answers are included.

See more resources on KS3 forces.

The information from the introduction to this worksheet:

When an elastic object (such as a spring) is stretched, the length it increases by is called the extension.

Hooke’s Law states that the extension of an elastic object is directly proportional to the force applied to it.

The equation to calculate Hooke’s law is:

F = k x e

F = force (N)           k = spring constant (N/m)           e = extension (m)

This worksheet provides clear instruction with a comfortable format (easy to read and technically accurate diagrams, comfortable white space and separated formula space) presented in a step-wise format that could be used independently by students as well as with instruction. Excellent focus on the linear nature of this law, and clear, easy to use and read data table and grid.
