Resource type
Student activity

An engaging and accessible resource for key stage 3 chemistry based on the principle of dual coding. Students read snippets of information about metals and the reactivity series and choose an image to illustrate each fact, explaining the reasons for their choices. The short texts cover mining, chemical bonds and extraction of metals from compounds. They touch on the order of metals and carbon in the reactivity series and on the use of carbon in obtaining metals from metal oxides. Students will learn key terms such as 'ore', 'metal compound' and 'electrolysis'.

Students can choose from the images provided or else draw their own.

This resource introduces the concepts of metal reactivity and displacement reactions in very simple terms and will be helpful for learners with SEND or English as an additional language.

One of the facts about the reactivity series of metals from this resource:

The way that the metal is removed depends on where the metal is found on the reactivity series. The more reactive a metal is, the harder it is to break its bonds and free the metal.
