A wonderfully straightforward explanation of when to use the verb 'ser' and when to use the verb 'estar', using three simple and fail-safe rules.

The worksheet includes step-by-step practice of the two verbs, progressing from controlled practice to free practice:

  1. Students choose the correct infinitive form for translating 'to be'.
  2. They complete gapped sentences in Spanish with the correctly conjugated verb.
  3. They translate those sentences from Spanish to English.
  4. They translate a complete paragraph from Spanish to English.

Students can then write their own paragraph about themselves, their family and their school using the Spanish text as a model.

The 'rules' given in this resource:

  1. What is it/he/she like?
    Use 'ser'.
  2. What condition is it/he/she in?
    Use 'estar'.
  3. Where is it/he/she?
    Use 'estar'.
