Comparing persuasive speeches
Students compare speeches given by James Corden (in character as Smithy from 'Gavin and Stacey') and President Obama, analysing the techniques and then replicating these in their own writing.
Tasks include:
- listing persuasive techniques used in speeches
- watching YouTube clips of Smithy and Barack Obama
- annotating scripts
- imitating the style of Smithy's speech
- completing a comparison grid for the two speeches.

I used it in class. While we in Pakistan are sadly unable to officially use Youtube, especially at school, students read out these two extracts. They found this exercise of comparing the two speeches' use of persuasive technique gave them quite an insight. thank you so much!
