A number of teaching activities accompany an image of a beach. Students also explore Dylan Thomas' narrative 'Holiday Memory'.
The teaching activities provide a lesson sequence which includes: discussion of beach holidays, responding to the image of the beach, creating sensory descriptions, analysing Thomas' writing, writing descriptions of a beach holiday and a worksheet contrasting using similes and metaphors.
The activities would be appropriate for students learning how to describe settings or mood, as well as those developing these ideas into a more developed piece of descriptive writing.
