A creative resource designed to support KS4 students in their development of descriptive technique analysis and use in their own writing.

Developing descriptive writing skills at KS4

This detailed resource is ideal for supporting GCSE students in their understanding of descriptive techniques and how authors weave these into texts to build rich contexts and engage readers.

The resource has a range of extracts with relevant exam-style GCSE English Language questions to support the development of students' descriptive technique understanding. Once students feel confident with their evaluation of descriptive techniques, there are opportunities for students to unleash creativity and develop their own descriptive writing to strengthen their skills for English Language Paper 1.

What's included

This resource features targeted activities taking students through the analysis of descriptive writing in extracts and enables them to develop these in their own writing. Choose from:

  • Free printable worksheet of descriptive extracts with targeted questions and descriptive writing opportunities
  • Editable worksheet (subscribers only) to adapt and customise.

How to use this descriptive writing skills guide

This resource is useful at the beginning of GCSE English Language study to get students thinking about the nuts and bolts of descriptive writing techniques and how writers employ these to effect in texts.

The activities would also be helpful as part of the students' revision periods in preparation for classroom assessments during their GCSE English Language study or in the run up to the final examinations.

KS3 students would also benefit from utilising this resource to enrich their understanding of descriptive techniques, how authors use techniques to engage readers, and the impact of descriptive techniques on plot and character.

A sample extract from the resource:

A good writer uses small, convincing details and when you’re asked to analyse texts, you should be picking these out and exploring them in detail. As a writer, you need to develop detail too. Read the following descriptions:

 Text A

Ice skating

She held her breath and glanced down. Somewhere beneath the ice, the lake still breathed and trembled. The ice might not yet be thick enough to take her weight. What if they had misjudged this? She imagined the long threads of slimy weed pulling her downwards, entangling her in a murky, unfamiliar world. Down there the fish would be giants – pike with teeth like sharks and ancient catfish with whiskers like ropes. She shuddered.

How does the writer use language to show the girl’s fear?

  1. How does the writer use language in each of the different descriptions? Complete the grid below.

You could include:

  • words and phrases (interesting vocabulary, active verbs, effective phrases)
  • language features (imagery, repetition, alliteration, emotive language, rhetorical questions)
  • sentence forms (long or short sentences, sentence fragments, repetition of structure, unusual punctuation).

Choose two techniques from each text and explain their effect.
