Introducing Dickens: lesson activities
A wonderful set of resources for KS3 students, introducing them to the life, works and language of Charles Dickens, focusing on key extracts, key themes and key characters from A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, Nicholas Nickleby and Martin Chuzzlewit.
With an engaging and diverse range of research, vocabulary development, reading comprehension and writing tasks, this rich collection of classroom activities works perfectly within a knowledge-rich curriculum, or as an introductory series of lessons for students who will be studying a Dickens novel at GCSE.
There are creative writing activities, including diary entries, caricature profiles, and a Scroogian Christmas card apology, as well as writing to describe, explain, inform and persuade tasks.
An example activity from the resource:
Imagine you are Scrooge and have just been visited by the three spirits. The visits have made you realise that you need to mend your ways. You decide to write a Christmas card apologising for your faults and promising to make amends.
