Living in lockdown KS4 reading workbook
A series of six reading activities all on a 'survival' theme. Featuring writing by food writer Jack Monroe, astronaut Christina Koch, ironman John McAvoy and released captive Brian Keenan, the stories might help students empathise or provide perspective on their own feelings of confinement in 'lockdown'.
Each activity focuses on a different reading skill:
- Jack Monroe's story: retrieving information
- Christina Koch: comparing life on Earth now with an astronaut’s ‘re-entry’
- John McAvoy: summarising a survival tale
- Brian Keenan: analysing the language of a captive
- Comparing survivors research task: Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, Taylor Swift, Aron Ralston
- Independent reading ideas.
Many of the texts are available online, for which links are provided. The extract by Jack Monroe is on pp.90–91 of Teachit’s AQA English Language Paper 2 exam skills pack and the extract by Brian Keenan is on p.82 of Teachit’s Reading more non-fiction teaching pack.
