This engaging classroom worksheet includes a range of tasks for GCSE students to explore the character of Macduff, and the themes of loyalty and bravery in the play.

There are six tasks, focusing on key scenes in the play (Act 2 Scene 3, Act 4 Scene 1 and Act 5 Scene 6), including a speaking and listening hot seating activity, a dual-coding activity with a social media storyboard and a set of comprehension questions to check students' understanding.

There's also a helpful practice paper question on bravery and loyalty, looking at an extract from the play to check students' learning. This teaching resource also includes teaching notes and suggested answers.

Perfect for revision and consolidation.

Example tasks from the resource:

Task 1: Quotations

Read Act 2 Scene 3 from Macbeth’s arrival and then choose 4 key quotations that show Macduff’s thoughts about the murder of King Duncan.

Task 4: Hot seating Macduff

In groups, discuss the following questions and choose someone to be ‘hot seated’ as Macduff:

  • When did you first suspect Macbeth could be implicated in the death of King Duncan?
  • Why didn’t you go to Macbeth’s coronation feast?
  • Why did you admire Duncan so much?
  • Why did you go to England? With hindsight, do you regret going to England and leaving your family vulnerable and unprotected?
  • Did you have any ambitions to be king yourself?

Task 6: Exam-style question

Extract from Act 5 Scene 6

Explore how Shakespeare presents ideas about loyalty and bravery in this extract and the play as a whole.
