Student activity

A resource that can be used with any novel. Students are assigned different roles within a reading circle to explore a whole-class text together.

Students become more confident in talking about literature, and their level of engagement increases with this collaborative task. Note templates for each role are included. The roles encourage students to focus closely on the following aspects of one chapter of their text:

  • vocabulary
  • themes
  • summarising the plot
  • characters
  • language: style and techniques.

Students could also be filmed discussing their findings and then watch their discussions back to peer and self assess.

This is excellent. It allows you to assign roles according to students' abilities and also guides them in their reading so that they can get the most out of it.
