Migration and the making of the NHS – animation
Migrants have played a key role in the NHS ever since its creation 75 years ago, in 1948. Today, around a quarter of NHS staff are non-British nationals or from a minority ethnic background, rising to around a third of nurses and health visitors and almost half of doctors.
This short animation introduces the Migration Museum's online Heart of the Nation: Migration and the making of the NHS exhibition, which explores this story and the history of medical migrants who have shaped our health services throughout the centuries. This online exhibition is a fantastic way to bring to life the study of a GCSE history unit on medicine or health and to explore these important stories.
The animation is free to download and makes a great lesson starter.
