Significance

A card-sorting activity for key stage 3 or key stage 4 students on the consequences of appeasement that encourages them to think creatively.

Students sort statements into categories of their choosing; possibilities include:

  • the country/countries impacted
  • short-term vs long-term consequences
  • positive vs negative consequences
  • causing war or preventing it.

They then create a mind map of the most significant consequences.

This resource can be used in preparation for the AQA wider world depth study Conflict and tension: The inter-war years, 1918–1939 or for any unit on the causes of the Second World War.

Sample cards from the card-sorting activity:

Russia decided that Britain and France would never stand up to Hitler and that war with Germany
was inevitable.

Czechoslovakia was weakened. Poland and Hungary took some of the Czech land that Germany did not.
