How to use these Christmas acrostic poem resources
For KS1 (years 1-2), begin by introducing acrostic poems using the PowerPoint presentation. Then, provide templates with word banks to support their poem creation. Finally, encourage creativity by having pupils illustrate their poems with festive drawings, combining language skills with artistic expression.
For KS2 (Years 3-6), review acrostic poems using the PowerPoint, emphasising advanced poetic techniques. Use the templates without word banks to challenge pupils' vocabulary and creativity, whilst encouraging the use of alliteration, similes and descriptive language in their compositions.
For both key stages:
- Begin with a whole-class brainstorming session to generate Christmas-related vocabulary.
- Model the creation of an acrostic poem using an interactive whiteboard.
- Provide opportunities for peer review and sharing of completed poems.
- Display finished acrostic poems as part of a festive classroom display.
These resources are flexible and can be differentiated to meet the needs of various ability levels within each key stage.

Christmas acrostic poems
An acrostic is a poem. Try saying ‘a-cros-tic’ out loud. An acrostic poem is simple but it can tell you so much!
You can make your acrostic poem about anything you like. One thing you should know is every acrostic poem has a little mystery.
Look closer and you’ll see a hidden pattern you can follow to solve this mystery.
Every line begins with a letter. Put the letters together and you make a word.
Look at the example below and find the acrostic word made from the beginning letters of each line.
Paper wrapping bold and bright. Ribbons and bows, a true delight. Everywhere is full of light. Surprises galore waiting in sight. Every gift a blessing to share. Now every look is filled with care. Time spent together, full of cheer. Sharing special moments at the best time of year. |
