Government plans social media ban for under-16s
By Jacy Sumner, staff reporter
The UK Government has announced plans to ban children under the age of 16 from using several popular social media platforms. If the proposal becomes law, the new rules could come into force in early 2027.
The planned ban would include apps such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube and X because they allow users to share posts, videos and comments. However, messaging services such as WhatsApp would not be affected.
The Government says the changes are needed to help protect young people from harmful online content. Children can sometimes come across upsetting or dangerous material, including cyberbullying, violent videos, unrealistic images and posts that encourage unhealthy behaviour. Ministers believe that spending less time on social media could improve children's wellbeing and give them more time for hobbies, sport and family life.
